Standardized Care With Electronic Aids Improves SCIP Compliance

A new study published in the American Journal of Medical Quality finds that standardizing the surgical care process leads to increased compliance with the Surgical Care Improvement Project.

 

Researchers tested a standardized care system on early indwelling urinary catheter removal in adult cardiac surgery patients, which is a publically reported quality measure under SCIP.

The research team created a standardized electronic tool to identify which patients were candidates for early catheter removal based on a number of factors, including health status and fulfillment of clinical expectations.

Once the intervention was in place, SCIP compliance went from the baseline 91 percent to 97 percent.
