Report highlights cataract surgery 'never events' in Massachusetts — 7 key takeaways

A Betsy Lehman Center for Patient Safety and Medical Error Reduction report detailed several cataract surgeries' "never events" in Massachusetts, according to WWLP.com.

The report examined data from 2011 to 2015.

1. During the study period, the state Department of Public Health received reports for 28 serious events.

2. Of those events, 15 involved cases where surgeons implanted the wrong lens.

3. Five cases entailed surgeons anesthetizing the wrong eye.

4. Of the examined cases, five cases had nerve blocks causing vision loss.

5. A surgeon performed a procedure on the wrong eye and another case involved the wrong patient undergoing a procedure.

6. In Massachusetts, surgeons performed more than 60,000 cataract surgeries.

7. The Betsy Lehman Center is currently devising tools to help providers enhance cataract surgery safety.
