Patient Safety Tool: Personal Protective Equipment Education and Competency Tools

Jaimie Oh -

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services offers two tools designed to improve education and competency on the use of personal protective equipment by healthcare professionals.

OSHA requires the use of personal protective equipment, including gloves, gowns/aprons, masks and respirators, to reduce employee exposure to certain hazards.

The Wisconsin DHS education includes an overview on use of personal protective equipment, federal regulations and selection of appropriate personal protective equipment.

The competency includes an overview of how to don and remove protective equipment properly. It also poses specific and hypothetical situations to test how employees select appropriate equipment given the circumstances.
