Patient Safety Tool: 2012 Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae Prevention Toolkit

Jaimie Oh -

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has developed a toolkit for the prevention and control of Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae infections.

Infections with CRE are difficult to treat and have been associated with mortality rates as high as 40-50 percent. Due to the movement of patients throughout the healthcare system, if CRE are a problem in one facility, then typically they are a problem in other facilities in the region as well. To help protect patients and prevent transmission, CDC has released a CRE toolkit which expands on the 2009 CDC recommendations and continues to be updated as new information becomes available. The 2012 CRE toolkit includes:

•    An introduction with background information and a list of definitions
•    Surveillance methods
•    Facility-level prevention strategies

Download the 2012 CRE toolkit for use in your facility.
