Researchers studied the medical records of adult patients who underwent a combined 20,116 ophthalmology procedures at an ASC in Rochester, Minn., from July 1, 2010, to Sept. 30, 2016.
Three findings:
1. Along with intraoperative fentanyl use, severe postoperative pain and postoperative opioid requirements were associated with prolonged recovery times.
2. The median recovery duration was 36 minutes.
3. Recovery duration was longest with general anesthesia, and for orbitotomy and strabismus procedures. Recovery duration was shortest for cataract procedures.
