Nearly 30% of physicians are unaware of PrEP benefits, CDC estimates — 4 highlights

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates almost one-third of healthcare providers are unaware of pre-exposure prophylaxis' benefits, according to Vaccine News.

Here are four highlights:

1. When PrEP is taken as a daily pill, it reduces the risk of HIV infection by more than 90 percent in sexually active patients.

2. The FDA approved the drug in 2012.

3. It minimizes intravenous drug users' risk of infection by 70 percent.

4. Each year, nearly 40,000 people are diagnosed with HIV infections.
