National Quality Foundation taps Dr. Shantanu Agrawal as new president and CEO: 4 key facts

The Washington, D.C.-based National Quality Forum selected Shantanu Agrawal, MD, as its next president and CEO.

Here’s what you should know.

1. Dr. Agarwal is the former deputy administrator and director of CMS’ Center for Program Integrity.

2. Dr. Agrawal will succeed Helen Darling, MD, the organization’s current interim president and CEO.

3. While at CMS, Dr. Agarwal led an effort to improve physicians’ experience with Medicare when he approved a measure to minimize the amount of administrative tasks physicians handle.

4. At the center, he lowered healthcare’s cost through detecting and eliminating excessive spending practices.

5. Bruce Siegel, MD, NQF’s board chair and president and CEO of Washington, D.C.-based America’s Essential Hospitals, said, “Shantanu understands the importance of advancing quality and patient safety both from the frontlines of medicine and from a national policy perspective. He is the innovative, passionate focused visionary that NQF needs now to ensure that we respond strategically and effectively to the nation’s dynamically changing healthcare landscape.”
