1. The male student contracted strain B of the Neisseria meningitis bacterium.
2. The vaccine most children receive doesn’t defend against serogroup B.
3. Meningitis affects the membranes of the spinal cord and brain with inflammation. Common symptoms are fever, vomiting, headache, stiff neck and tiredness.
4. About 500 students have received preemptive treatment. The illness may be contracted through long contact.
5. Most people will experience symptoms three days to four days after contraction.
