Med tech jobs growing at a faster rate than RNs — And may be better paid

Although there are more job postings for registered nurses than med tech positions, postings for med tech jobs are growing at a faster rate, according to a Joblift analysis.

Here are 15 statistics:

1. Joblift analyzed 90,681 med tech jobs, including postings for dental hygienists, diagnostic imaging workers, nuclear medicine technologists, MRI technologists, respiratory therapists, veterinary technologists and radiation therapists.

2. There were 2,176,415 total job postings for RNs in the U.S. over the last twelve months, or 5 percent of all jobs posted.

3. Nationwide, job postings for RNs have decreased at an average monthly rate of 1 percent.

4. Five med tech jobs exhibit the greatest average monthly growth:

  • MRI technologist: 9 percent
  • Veterinary technologist: 5 percent
  • Diagnostic imaging worker: 5 percent
  • Dental hygienist: 4 percent
  • Respiratory therapist: 4 percent

5. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median RN salary in 2017 was $70,000. These med tech positions offer comparable median salaries:

  • Radiation therapist: $80,570
  • Nuclear medicine technologist: $75,660
  • Dental hygienist: $74,070
  • Diagnostic imaging worker: $65,620
  • MRI technologist: $60,070   

6. According to the analysis, med tech job postings in Wyoming, Montana and North Dakota are growing by around 30 percent.
