Kaiser leverages patient portal to spike patient engagement: 5 insights

The Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente network implemented a patient portal to enhance patient engagement, according to AAFP News.

Here are five insights:

1. The network's physician practices use the patient portal to gather data, coordinate care and educate patients on their care.

2. Kaiser focuses on engaging patients on the individual level as patients are now making more decisions in their healthcare.

3. The network's patient portal includes a "personal action plan," which alerts patients about tests they should take and why they should take them. Many of the tests are ordered through the portal's automated system.

4. Since patients have been allowed to view their electronic health records, Kaiser has witnessed a boost in patient satisfaction.

5. Kaiser trained its physicians to integrate technology in the exam room as opposed to viewing it as a hindrance. Physicians and patients can look at the computer screen together to view images or watch a video explaining an exercise.
