Joint Commission's Proposed Patient Safety Goal Targets Overuse of Treatments, Procedures

The Joint Commission has proposed a new national patient safety goal regarding overuse of treatments, procedures and tests in healthcare.

The Joint Commission has posted its proposal on patient safety goals for hospitals and critical access hospitals. It is seeking input from the field until Jan. 24, 2012.

Elements of performance for this national patient safety goal includes regular evaluations to determine whether overuse of a selected treatment, procedure or test is occurring and, if so, how it can be addressed.
