Joint Commission Develops Alarm Management Safety Goal

The Joint Commission has released a new National Patient Safety Goal on Alarm Management for hospitals and critical access hospitals, effective Jan. 1, 2014.

The goal, NPSG.06.01.01, was created to improve the management of clinical alarms, thereby improving patient safety. Here are the four basic elements of performance; the complete description of the goal can be read on The Joint Commission website.

1. As of July 1, 2014, leaders establish alarm system safety as a hospital priority.
2. During 2014, identify the most important alarm signals to manage.
3. As of Jan. 1, 2016, establish policies and procedures for managing alarms identified in the second element of performance.
4. As of Jan. 1, 2016, educate staff and licensed independent practitioners about the purpose and proper operation of alarm systems for which they are responsible.
