Is that your physician texting? 5 things to know about medication text reminders

Texts from physicians may increase patients’ likelihood to take their prescriptions on schedule, according to PBS. Researchers analyzed 16 studies of about 3,000 chronically ill patients who received text message reminders about medication. JAMA Internal Medicine published the findings.

Here are five things to know:

1. Patients increased from a 50 percent adherence rate to a 68 percent adherence rate after receiving text reminders about their medication.

2. However, the researchers warned their analysis didn’t account for patients becoming irritated with numerous text reminders. Nor did the study establish a standard text reminder schedule.

3. The text message reminder system is an inexpensive way to improve patient experience.

4. However inexpensive, text messages still cost money, which could present a problem for some patients.

5. Although text messages may help remind patients, it still doesn’t track whether patients actually took the medications.
