How technology is making healthcare more hygienic: 5 takeaways

Real-time location systems are lowering hospital-acquired infections rates, Tech.Co reports.

Here's what you should know.

1. The World Health Organization released a report detailing the most common hospital-related infections and found 78 percent were HAIs.

2. Approximately, 1.7 million patients had at least one HAI in 2002, with HAIs causing 99,000 deaths that year.

3. Facilities are now using analytics produced through Real Time Location Systems to fight HAIs.

4. The systems can generate reports about average visits to hand hygiene stations or missed opportunities to improve on.

5. By collecting and leveraging data, hospitals can decrease cost and lower the HAI numbers. In 2004, HAIs overall economic impact was $6.5 billion. Health systems hope the RTLS stations can lower those significantly.
