House’s opioid legislation forgoes additional funding — 3 observations

The House opted to not include additional funding in their legislation to combat the opioid epidemic, according to The Hill.

Here are three observations:

1. The House’s response, or lack thereof, will likely spur stark resentment from Democrats. Democrats have sought out millions of additional dollars to fund initiatives such as physician education programs and prescription drug monitoring.

2. However, House Republican leaders argue they already approved $6 million in opioid programs in last year’s spending bill.

3. During the first week of May, House leaders plan to push eight bills centered on the opioid epidemic to the floor. Committees including Energy and Commerce, Judiciary, Education and Workforce and Veteran Affairs will determine the bulk of the legislations’ content.
