Florida marks 1st state of local Zika mosquito transmission; 4 people infected — 5 things to know

Florida Gov. Rick Scott confirmed the first Zika cases transmitted by mosquitoes within the United States, according to abc News.

Here are five things to know:

1. Florida officials reported the Zika outbreak has infected three men and one woman via local transmission, so far.  

2. Gov. Scott said the mosquitoes are transmitting Zika to people in a one-square-mile region in northern Miami.

3. Health officials are working on containment, testing the mosquitoes and people in the area. They do not believe the transmission is ongoing.

4. Within the United States,, more than 1,650 people have been diagnosed with Zika; the majority of these people contracted Zika outside of the country.

5. A CDC report confirmed Zika virus causes microcephaly and other serious birth defects.
