The ECRI Institute's Partnership for Health IT Patient Safety published, "Health IT Safe Practices: Toolkit for the Safe Use of Health IT for Patient Identification," according to HealthData Management.
Here are five insights:
1. ECRI Institute identified patient identification errors second among the top 10 patient safety concerns for healthcare in 2016.
2. ECRI released the guidance as misidentifying patients can harm care and negatively impact billing.
3. The toolkit offers eight recommendations for using HIT safely in regards to patient identification.
4. The eight recommendation topics are: "Include, Detect, Evaluate, Normalize, Tailor, Innovate, Follow-up and Yield," spelling out the mnemonic IDENTIFY.
5. The Partnership for Health IT Patient Safety came about in 2013. It involves many stakeholders working to enhance HIT safety.
