Ebola found in American physicians' eye after being cleared: 4 things to know

Brandon Howard -

Even after a patient recovers from Ebola, the virus can still exist for months in their eyeballs, researchers found in a report published in New England Journal of Medicine.

Here are four things to know:

1. Researchers noted a case study in which a man had Ebola in the acqueous humor 10 weeks after the virus cleared his body, reports Business Standard.

2. According to CNN the man was a physician named Ian Crozier, MD, who was discharged from Emory University Hospital in October and returned two months later when he was having eye problems.

3. Dr. Crozier was not at risk of spreading the disease during casual contact, according to a statement from Emory.

4. 18 confirmed cases of EVD were reported in the week of May 3, according to the World Health Organization.
