The Interdisciplinary Nursing Quality Research Initiative, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, offers a free toolkit featuring online modules to help nurses improve communication with intensive care unit patients who are unable to speak due to mechanical ventilation.
The toolkit, called Study of Patient-Nurse Effectiveness with Assisted Communication Strategies, includes a communication training program, techniques to interact with patients who are unable to speak and a presentation of the role of a speech language pathologist.
