CMS' new 'Meaningful Measures' attempt to reduce regulatory burden — 5 insights

CMS introduced several new quality measure initiatives called Meaningful Measures, healthcareITnews reports.

Here's what you should know:

1. The new initiative will streamline measures for physician practices, leaving only those related to quality and outcomes.

2. CMS Administrator Seema Verma said the new measures will help practices transition from fee-for-service towards a system rewarding value and quality.

3. The Meaningful Measures were developed by CMS with help from the Learning Action Network, National Academies of Medicine, Core Quality Measures Collaborative and National Quality Forum.

4. She said, "We all know it: Clinicians and hospitals have to report an array of measures to different payers. There are many steps involved in submitting them, taking time away from patients. Moreover, it's not clear whether all of these measures are improving patient care."

5. CMS launched a second initiative called the Patients Over Paperwork Initiative which allows provider groups to identify burdens that will be reviewed in an attempt to improve efficiency.
