ASCs more efficient than HOPDs, study finds

Procedures are more efficient when performed in an ASC compared to a hospital outpatient department, according to research published in the American Journal of Surgery.

The study authors reviewed and compared data for 220 procedures performed in ASCs and HOPDs. They examined procedure time, room turnover time and nonoperative time.

Overall, the average time for several aspects of surgery was longer in the HOPD than the ASC:

• Turnover time: 29.8 minutes in the HOPD, 24.5 minutes in the ASC
• Ancillary time: 32.2 minutes in the HOPD, 22.2 minutes in the ASC
• Procedure time: 77.4 minutes in the HOPD, 56.2 minutes in the ASC
• Exit time: 11.8 minutes in the HOPD, 8.5 minutes in the ASC
• Nonoperative time: 62.9 minutes in the HOPD, 48.7 minutes in the ASC

Researchers concluded that the findings suggest outpatient operations are more efficient when performed in ASCs.
