APIC comments on proposed federal rule protecting human subjects: 4 notes

The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology has commented on proposed revisions to the Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects.

Here are four notes:

1. APIC noted that it  recognizes the importance of balancing the protection of human subjects and facilitation of valuable research with the reduction in the burden to researchers.

2. However, APIC has recommended that HHS’ Office of Human Research Protection to clearly define the difference between public health surveillance and epidemiologic research.

3. The difference will help prevent unintended consequences resulting from burdensome controls on infection-related outcomes research, according to APIC.

4. APIC has also requested more details on certain aspects of the proposed regulations.
