The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology has announced its support for a new campaign launched by the Office of Healthcare Quality and the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services designed to encourage family members and caregivers to educate themselves about healthcare-associated infections and the steps they can take to protect themselves and their families, according to an APIC news release.
The "WAVE" campaign provides several free tools including a wallet card, brochure and posters organizations can use to support their infection prevention efforts.
In its release, APIC encouraged members and organizations nationwide to adopt materials to help educate and empower patients in the fight against HAIs.

"Educating patients is a key step in a comprehensive infection prevention strategy," said Michelle Farber, RN, CIC, APIC 2012 president, in the release. "We invite patients to take an active role and partner with their healthcare team in preventing infections."
