Here are five insights:
1. The initiative will emphasize risks associated with opioids as well as pain management alternatives to opioids.
2. Parsippany-Troy Hills, N.J.-based Pacira Pharmaceuticals offered ACS an education grant, which the society will use to create Opioids and Surgery: Use, Abuse and Alternatives, materials for professional and patient education.
3. Surgeons will be able to access resources on opioids and managing pain expectations as well as non-opioid alternatives and screening programs.
4. The resources will also emphasize team training in pain management, discharge and transition management.
5. ACS hopes this program will help develop a national standard for best intervention methods for pain control.
