90%+ of healthcare leaders cite drug shortages as major concern: 4 survey findings

Healthcare leaders have cited rising drug prices and pharmaceutical management as major concerns, a Premier survey found.

Here are four findings:

1. More than 90 percent of healthcare leaders said drug shortages will be an ongoing issue for their organizations over the next three years.

2. Healthcare leaders ranked drug pricing and pharmaceutical shortages as primary areas of concern for the past two consecutive years.

3. Approximately 70 percent of respondents said it will be imperative for their organization to operate its own specialty pharmacy moving forward.

4. More than 90 percent said precision medicine or personalized medicine's growth will boost their supply chain spending.

"In our view, one of the best ways to ensure fair pricing is by driving increased competition and greater use of generics and biosimilars," said Michael Alkire, COO of Premier. "At the same time, we also need to provide prescribers with apples-to-apples mechanisms they can use to compare products in a therapeutic category, evidence-based facts around which products deliver optimal quality at the best value and aligned financial incentives."
