7 insights into the US total joint arthroplasty market

The American Joint Replacement Registry released its 2016 annual report, offering analytical insights into the U.S. total joint arthroplasty network.

AJRR based its data on more than 427,000 cumulative procedures between 2012 and 2015.

Here are seven things to know about the state of the U.S. total joint arthroplasty market:

1. TJR patients had a mean age of 66.5 years old.

2. Around 59.2 percent of TJR patients were female, while 40.8 percent were male.

3. Revision hip arthroplasty patients had a mean age of 67.1 years old, higher than the 65.4 year median age of primary hip arthroplasty patients.

However, the mean age of revision knee arthroplasty patients was 61.8 years old, lower than the 66.4 median age of primary knee arthroplasty patients.

4. Physicians increased their use of ceramic femoral head hip implants from 2012 to 2015. Physicians also began to use more antioxidant polyethylene acetabular liners in the past five years.

5. Surgeons prefer to use cementless stems and unipolar heads in hemiarthroplasty for hip replacement patients of all ages.

6. Across the industry unicompartmental knee implant use decreased, yet it still accounts for approximately 5 percent of all knee arthroplasty procedurals. Similar to hip implants, antioxidant polyethylene use is on the rise.

7. AJRR determined revision burden was 10.2 percent for hip procedures and 8.7 for knee procedures in 2016. Revision burden rates have remained "relatively constant" from 2012 to 2015.
