5 notes about a new coalition tackling diagnostic errors

The Coalition to Improve Diagnosis formed to take on the issue of misdiagnosing in the medical industry, according to Medscape.

Here are five notes:

1. At the head of the newly formed coalition is the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine, a nonprofit led by physicians.

2. About 12 million patients are misdiagnosed every year, according to a study published in BMJ Quality and Safety.

3. The coalition will represent clinicians, patients, families, employers, consumers, researchers, policymakers and educators.

4. The American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation, American Association of Nurse Practitioners, American Board of Internal Medicine, American Board of Medical Specialties, American College of Emergency Physicians, American College of Physicians, American Society for Healthcare Risk Management, Consumers Advancing Patient Safety, The Leapfrog Group, National Patient Safety Foundation and the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine comprise the founding membership of the coalition.

5. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality back the coalition.
