5 key findings on surgical site infections

Healthcare-acquired infections often put patients' lives at risk, with surgical site infections ranking among the most common type of HAIs.

Here are five things to know about SSIs based on CDC data.

1. SSIs account for 31 percent of all HAIs among hospitalized patients.

2. Among 849,659 operative procedures, there was an overall SSI rate of 1.9 percent between 2006 and 2008.

3. Between 2008 and 2013, there was a 19 percent decline in SSIs related to 10 select procedures.

4. There is a 3 percent mortality correlated to SSIs.

5. Seventy-five percent of SSI-related deaths are directly due to that SSI.
