3 strategies to improve patients’ opioid storage, disposal practices

The American Medical Association gave physicians three steps to improve patients’ safe opioid storage and disposal practices.

1. Communicate with patients about the correct use of opioids. Let them know the risks when users do not take medication as prescribed.

2. Speak to patients about how to safely store their medications.

3. Advise patients to safely dispose unused medications if they are expired, unwanted or unused.
