1st uterus transplant in US fails: 5 things to know

Cleveland Clinic surgeons removed the nation’s first transplanted uterus from a 26-year-old woman, declaring it a failure, according to abc6 WATE.

Here are five things to know:

1. The patient received the transplant on Feb. 24.

2. Surgeons removed the uterus after the patient experienced a sudden complication.

3. The surgeons and pathologists continue to investigate what caused the complication.

4. This woman received the first of 10 planned uterus transplants in Cleveland Clinic’s clinical trial, which will continue.

5. Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston have also been cleared for uterus transplant studies.
