16K patients affected in Redwood Eye Center data breach: 4 details

Vallejo, Calif.-based Redwood Eye Center's managed service provider experienced a data breach affecting 16,000 patients' health information, HIPAA Journal reported.

Here are the key details to know:

1. IT Lighthouse, the Redwood Eye Center's application-hosting service provider, was affected by ransomware installed on a server hosting Redwood Eye Center patient information.

2. A third-party computer forensics firm helped Redwood Eye Center recover the patient data.

3. Patient names, birth dates, insurance information and addresses may have been accessed by the hackers.

4. The investigation did not find any evidence that the attackers accessed the patients' protected health information.
