Jaimie Oh -

Researchers have determined 10 challenges to improving healthcare quality, according to a study published in BMJ Quality and Safety.

For this study, researchers analyzed reports on five improvement programs carried out by the U.K.'s Health Foundation. The researchers also conducted a review of published literature on quality improvement. Their analysis revealed 10 common challenges:

1.    Convincing people that there is a problem that is relevant to them
2.    Convincing them that the solution chosen is the right one
3.    Getting data collection and monitoring systems right

4.    Excess ambitions and 'projectness'
5.    Organizational cultures, capacities and contexts
6.    Tribalism and lack of staff engagement
7.    Leadership
8.    Incentivizing participation and 'hard edges'
9.    Securing sustainability
10.    Risk of unintended consequences

The researchers suggest tackling these underlying barriers may boost healthcare providers' efforts to improve quality.
