Why the ASC industry needs social workers — 5 thoughts

Physicians at ambulatory surgery centers are often pressed for time and outpatient health specialists may be the key to enhancing patient care in outpatient settings, according to HIT Consultant.

Here are five thoughts:

1. Outpatient health specialties, counselors, public health managers and medical social workers can offer an ASC a range of services that the staff does not have the time or resources to provide.

2. Social workers can give patients crucial information during their episode of care ranging from treatment options to walking through diagnoses.

3. Social workers may also be particularly beneficial for patients who may have difficulty taking care of themselves, including young children and elderly people.

4. ASCs can employ social workers to help patients with different responsibilities after their procedures, such as obtaining a job following their recovery from a disability.

5. They may also enhance a patient's long-term care as they have can work with a patient for months, or longer, following their procedure.
