These are the top-paying states for five physician specialties, according to 2024 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, published April 2.

The bureau released updated compensation data to reflect May 2024 information, the latest available. 

Anesthesia: Minnesota

  • Annual mean wage: $465,340

Cardiology: Indiana

  • Annual mean wage: $529,020

Internal medicine: Georgia

  • Annual mean wage: $406,430

Ophthalmology (except pediatrics): Ohio

  • Annual mean wage: $367,750

Orthopedics (except pediatrics): Wisconsin

  • Annual mean wage: $546,740
