Nurse practitioners in California, the state where NPs have the highest average annual salary, earn $65,010 more than NPs in Tennessee, the state where NPs have the lowest annual salary.

In California, NPs earn nearly $25,000 more per year than in New York, the state with the second highest average annual salary for NPs. 

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released updated salary information for nurse practitioners to reflect 2024 information on April 2. 

Here are the top five highest and lowest-paying states for nurse practitioners:

Top five:

  1. California: $173,190
  2. New York: $148,410
  3. Oregon: $148,030
  4. Massachusetts: $145,410
  5. Washington: $143,620

Bottom five:

  1. Tennessee: $108,180
  2. Alabama: $109,650
  3. South Carolina: $113,950
  4. Arkansas: $116,030
  5. Kentucky: $116,930
