Osmin Morales, MD, owner of a pain management clinic in Weston, Fla., issued prescriptions for controlled substances to most patients without any medical basis, according to a Jan. 19 news release from the Drug Enforcement Administration.

On many occasions, according to the report, Dr. Morales issued prescriptions without examining the patient. He also often pre-wrote prescriptions for controlled substances and provided them to office managers to hand out to patients in exchange for $250 cash payments.

Dr. Morales allegedly prescribed opioids to more than 1,000 patients, most often the maximum available doses. He is scheduled to be sentenced April 17.
