The average surgery center performed 3,695 cases in 2008. The total number of surgery centers in the U.S. was 5,876. Here is the breakdown, by percentage, of surgery centers by their total annual case volume, according to SDI.

1.    0-1,499 cases — 29.4 percent
2.    1,500-2,000 cases — 21.9 percent
3.    3,000-4,499 cases — 17.6 percent
4.    4,500-5,999 cases — 10.5 percent
5.    6,000 cases or more — 20.6 percent
