Nurses at 10 SSM Health outpatient locations in Dane County, Wis., are attempting to unionize, according to an Aug. 13 report from Wisconsin Public Radio.
The nurses filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board, seeking a union election. According to the petition, the bargaining unit would include 380 RNs and PRNs who provide care at outpatient clinics operated by SSM Health Dean Medical Group.
“The time has come for us to form our union so our voices are actually heard and we can create real change,” Krissy Butor, RN, a nurse in outpatient surgery, said in a statement. “The main areas we need to improve are staffing, fair compensation that retains experienced nurses and better training of our newer nurses.”
In June, nurses at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, Wis., voted to unionize and the NLRB certified the election in July. SSM Health filed an appeal of the certification of the NLRB’s certification vote.
“We greatly value our nurses and the important contributions they make every day,” a spokesperson from SSM Health said in a statement. “Our focus remains on supporting them and continuing to provide exceptional care for our patients and the communities we serve.”
