Laura Dyrda -

A Manhattan jury convicted a New York-based physician of accepting illegal kickbacks from Insys to prescribe its opioid drug, Subsys, according to a 4 New York, an NBC affiliate

Four things to know:

1. The jury convicted Gordon Freedman, MD, of accepting more than $300,000 from Insys that were described as speaker fees, but in actuality were bribes. The events where Dr. Freedman was allegedly speaking for educational purposes were instead social affairs, according to the report.

2. The jury also found Dr. Freedman, the fourth-highest prescriber of Subsys in 2014, of violating honest services wire fraud.

3. Four other Manhattan physicians have pled guilty to accepting illegal kickbacks from Insys in similar cases.

4. Dr. Freedman's sentencing is scheduled for March 2020.
