New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai creates ophthalmic innovation program: 4 key notes

Laura Dyrda -

The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai created the Ophthalmic Innovation and Technology Program.

Here are four things to know:

1. The program is designed to bring together ophthalmology experts to train faculty and residents on advanced surgical technologies. The hospital hopes to establish a center of excellence with minimally invasive surgical techniques.

2. Within the new facility, Mount Sinai physicians will have the opportunity to learn about new devices with the initial focus on training for micro-interventions for glaucoma and cataract procedures.

3. The center's long term goal is to expand into more areas for minimally invasive ophthalmic surgery.

4. Sean Ianchulev, MD, a professor of ophthalmology at the Icahn School of Medicine, will serve as director of the ophthalmic innovation and technology program. He led the development team for Lucentis, a successful drug therapy for patients with macular degeneration, vein occlusions and diabetic macular edema.
