Here are four things to know:
1. So far, three cases have been performed at SickKids, thanks to a donation of the laser equipment and technical expertise from LASIK MD, as well as an Innovation grant from SickKids. The team hopes to do at least 20 cases every year.
2. The focus of the procedure is on children who can’t wear glasses or contact lenses because of developmental or behavioral issues, such as severe autism or major facial abnormalities.
3. Kamiar Mireskandari, PhD, an ophthalmologist in ophthalmology and vision sciences at SickKids, performed the most recent procedure.
4. Each procedure is roughly 10 minutes per eye, and involves remodeling the front surface of the eye using a laser.
