Malpractice mega-verdicts skyrocketing: 5 numbers to know

Malpractice awards are getting higher for physicians and hospitals across the country.

Here are five key numbers to know:

57. The number of medical malpractice verdicts of $10 million or more during 2023, according to data from TransRe cited in a Feb. 2 Medscape report. More than half of those verdicts hit $25 million or more. 

67.7%. The percent growth in malpractice verdicts of $10 million or more from 2013, when it was 34, to 2023, according to the same TransRe data. 

$261 million. The record-breaking malpractice verdict returned by a Florida jury against St. Petersburg, Fla.-based Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital for a lawsuit made famous by a Netflix documentary.

$120 million. Another record-breaking malpractice verdict Valhalla, N.Y.-based Westchester Medical Center Health Network was ordered by a jury to pay a patient and his family following delayed stroke care that resulted in brain damage.

1.1% to 3%. The percent increase each year in average premium rates for physicians from 2019 to 2023 in states without patient compensation funds, according to Monitor data cited by Medscape.
