Q: What are the most effective initiatives you've implemented at your center to improve patient flow and scheduling efficiency?

Jeany Dunaway: The two big ways include:

• Implementation of One Medical Passport
• Daily huddle between preop coordinator, scheduler, OR charge, preop and postop along with anesthesia.

Q: How do you motivate staff to change their behavior and "buy in" to initiatives to become more efficient?

JC: Basically, we follow the rules without exception. I prefer to run the center in this manner so that we are ready any day for a survey and I expect my staff to do the same. This has been communicated monthly in staff meetings and on a daily basis. I think communication is key. I also reward staff with recognition for Good Catches and excellent survey results with lunches, etc.

Q: Where are the best opportunities for ASC physicians and owners to ensure the center runs efficiently?

JC: Hire an Administrator who follows the rules, cares about their staff and rewards good behavior.
