Franklin Surgery Center successfully implements peripheral vascular procedures: 5 things to know

Franklin Surgery Center in New Jersey, a Surgical Center Affiliates facility, was a successful surgery center when the leadership team decided a cardiovascular program could add value, according to an SCA case study. The center introduced peripheral vascular procedures in partnership with Peter Pappas, MD, a general and vascular surgeon.

Here are five things to know:

1. The majority of peripheral vascular procedures are currently performed in hospitals, but many could be performed in an ASC. Franklin Surgery Center Administrator Amy Fuchs saw the opportunity to bring those cases to her center and worked with SCA’s dedicated cardiovascular team to launch the program.

2. The ASC leveraged the team’s existing skills to implement the program in addition to ordering new medical equipment and running a mock procedure to make sure the program’s first case was a success.

3. Franklin Surgery Center launched its PV program at the end of 2016 with three high-acuity procedures. Now, Dr. Pappas regularly perform PV procedures at the center.

4. SCA helped ensure the transition to cardiovascular cases went smoothly.

5. Patients stand to save 41 percent on average per procedure by having their PV procedure done in the ASC instead of the hospital.
