Former surgery center CEO aims to fill US Senate vacancy — 4 details

A former ASC leader is among the applicants lining up to fill a U.S. Senate vacancy when Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., resigns at the end of the year, local outlet The Times reports.

Four details:

1. Andy Whitener, an employee of Gainesville, Ga.-based Northeast Georgia Health System, is applying for the position along with four other applicants:

  • U.S. Rep. Doug Collins, R-Gainesville.
  • Martha Zoller, WDUN radio host and former adviser to Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp
  • Frank Norton Jr., CEO of The Norton Agency
  • Lewis Fraser, a Gainesville City Schools teacher

2. Mr. Whitener is a physical therapist at NGHS, where he also assists with strategic planning and accreditation preparation. He is the president and owner of P.A.C.E. Consulting.

3. Mr. Whitener's prior experience includes serving as CEO of Gainesville Surgery Center, interim CEO of the Gwinnett Center for Outpatient Surgery in Duluth, Ga., director of The Rehabilitation Institute at NGHS, and administrative director of NGHS's post-acute services.

4. Mr. Kemp will appoint someone to serve in the soon-to-be vacant seat until a special election is held on Nov. 3, 2020. Applicants' resumes are available for public review here.
