Florida ASC hacked

Ocala-based Surgery Center of Mid Florida experienced a data security event earlier this year that may have compromised patient information.

The center said that on or about Feb. 21, it discovered unusual activity on its networks. The center then used cybersecurity experts to investigate the incident. That investigation determined that unauthorized users accessed the ASC’s network through its IT vendor, according to a notice on the company’s website.

The ASC is notifying patients as a precaution, but said there is no evidence that patient information was accessed during the incident.

The incident was submitted to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights Breach Portal July 24.

Surgery Center of Mid Florida provides gastroenterology and ophthalmology services.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
