Dr. Redmond Burke uses Google Cardboard prior to successful cardiac surgery — 5 takeaways

Allison Sobczak -

Redmond Burke, MD, of Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami, performed a life-saving heart surgery after first practicing on Google Cardboard, a virtual reality simulator.

Here are five takeaways:

1. Dr. Burke is a congenital heart surgeon and a pioneer of finding less invasive and traumatic ways to operate on patients.

2. The patient, a baby girl, was born with only one lung and a deformed heart.

3. Juan-Carlos Muniz, MD, who runs the MRI program at Niklaus Children’s Hospital, took scans of the patient’s chest and made a 3-D model of them.

4. Virtual reality, which is already being used to help train some medical students, could lead to better operating procedures and decrease potential risks.

5. The successful surgery was performed on Dec. 10, 2015.
