The average happiness score for responding physicians was 3.96. The Medscape survey sought to dig deeper into the reasoning for this score, and for any discrepancies between different kind sof physicians. According to the report, the happiest physician is a rheumatologist, was born in the United States and is of normal weight and excellent health. This physician exercises regularly, has 1 or 2 drinks a day, doesn’t smoke and is in good financial health.
The unhappiest physicians are internists, gastroenterologists and neurologists, according to the report. The unhappiest physician is in poor health, exercises less regularly and is obese. He is in his mid-50s, came to the United States as an adult and has no savings or unmanageable debt.
According to the report, family physicians, internists, general surgeons, pediatricians and ER physicians tended to take fewer vacation days, have less money and report poorer health than most other physician groups.
