Boston-based athenahealth has launched athenaOne for ASCs, a product that runs physician practices and their affiliated ASCs on one platform for clinical, operational and financial workflows, the company said Oct. 22.
The product is built for clinic-adjacent surgery centers that operate alongside physician practices. It is available now.
Key features include:
- One patient record kept in sync across the clinic and the ASC
- Single sign-on, with clinic and ASC schedules in one system
- Surgical orders placed in the clinic that connect directly to the surgical case; when the case is finished, athenaOne closes the order and updates the surgical history on its own
- One revenue cycle system with consolidated billing and automatic splitting of professional and facility claims
- Clinic and ASC data shown side by side
athenahealth also assigns ASC workflow experts to help customers set up the system, track performance and fix issues.
“For physician practices that operate surgery centers, the ASC doesn’t operate in isolation,” said Chad Dodd, vice president of product management at athenahealth. Mr. Dodd said bringing surgical workflows into athenaOne gives clinicians and staff a shared view of the patient and reduces the administrative burden of disconnected systems.
Dr. Ankur Patel, CEO and managing partner of Southern Pain and Spine, said many pain practices still use paper in the ASC. Dr. Patel said running athenaOne across the practice’s clinics and surgery centers has made documentation cleaner and helped teams move faster from procedure ordering through authorization, documentation and billing. Closing notes faster lets the billing team submit claims sooner and collect revenue faster, he said.
athenahealth said the launch is part of its ongoing investment in ASCs and that it plans to add more capabilities over time.
At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
