Windham, N.H.-based Medicus Healthcare Solutions released a report Oct. 29 examining the forces behind a projected 24% increase in ambulatory surgery center volumes over the next decade.

The locum tenens and workforce solutions company’s report, “Ambulatory Surgery Centers: Market Growth, Workforce Pressures, and Operational Demands,” pulls industry research, national data and Medicus’ proprietary data into a single snapshot of the ASC market.

More than 80% of surgeries now take place in outpatient settings, and about 90% of ASCs have at least some physician ownership, the report found. Maryland, Georgia, Idaho and Arizona have the most ASCs per 100,000 residents.

That demand is building as clinician supply tightens. National workforce projections show shortages in 2027 across several specialties that drive ASC case volume, including anesthesiology and gastroenterology.

Medicus, which places physicians and advanced practice providers with hospitals, health systems and medical groups nationwide, has released workforce reports in 2026 on emergency medicine, general surgery and cardiology.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
